Penang hosts the 12th Malaysia International Guan Gong Cultural Celebrations (第12届马来西亚国际关公文化节) from Friday 13 to Sunday 15 November 2026. According to the Penang Global Tourism events calendar, the festival is organised by the Penang Guan Gong Cultural Association and centres on the Penang War Emperor Temple (Wu Ti Meow), with the listing giving the Penang Toishan Ningyang Association at 36 King Street as the address.

Guan Gong (Guan Yu) is the red-faced general of the Three Kingdoms era, revered across the Chinese diaspora as a symbol of loyalty, integrity and brotherhood. This year's theme is "Righteousness Across the World" (义行天下). The organisers are bringing together Guan Gong temples and cultural groups, academics and international guests for three days of activities.

The programme listed so far: traditional worship ceremonies on the morning of 13 November (10am–12pm) and 14 November (7am–12pm), then a grand procession on the night of Saturday 14 November from 7pm to midnight. The celebrations close with a cultural symposium on Sunday 15 November from 9am to 2pm.

The Saturday night procession is the part most visitors will want to see, with George Town's old streets usually lined with spectators for events like this. The route has not been published, so check the organiser's Facebook page nearer the date. Expect road closures and heavy traffic around King Street and the surrounding lanes that evening, and consider walking in or taking a Grab rather than driving.

Who it's for: anyone interested in Chinese temple culture, photographers, and visitors who want to see a side of Penang's heritage beyond the street art. Dress modestly in temple areas, don't block the procession path, and ask before photographing worshippers up close. Admission arrangements for the symposium were not stated, so contact the organiser (Leong Ho Fei, +6014-245 0533) if you plan to attend.
